President’s Welcome

On behalf of the QELA Management Committee and QELA Conference Sub Committee, I am delighted to invite you to our annual conference, to be held from Wednesday 10 May to Friday 12 May.

In 2017, the QELA Conference is being held at the newly refurbished Marriott Hotel Surfers Paradise.  With the Commonwealth Games quickly approaching, the Gold Coast location is a timely opportunity that provides a beautiful backdrop for our conference social events.

The theme for this year’s Conference is “Capture the Moment”.   In an era of social media where “likes” and “loves” on Facebook and Instagram are dominated by selfies, it is easy to miss capturing the other moments.  In what marks QELA’s 30th anniversary year, it seemed appropriate that the 2017 Conference reflected “moments” that have shaped or will shape Queensland’s planning and environment landscape.

I am excited by this year’s program and the diversity of presentations packed into the three days.  The program features a collection of “moments” from across Queensland; from north to south, east to west, city to country.  These snapshots herald from a variety of disciplines and perspective to create an album of what has led to the development of Queensland as it stands today and where it may stand in the future.

Accompanying this busy education program are the Conference social events that provide an excellent opportunity to catch up with friends old and newly made. QELA has exclusive use of Level 77 of Q1 as the venue for our Gala Dinner on Thursday night, and the evening is sure to be a highlight!

I am confident this year’s Conference has something for everyone, and I look forward your involvement in capturing this important QELA event.
